Hi, I teach 18 month old to 3 year olds in day care. I’d like to integrate a reading program into my lesson plans over the Summer. Will the NYS Summer reading program include suggestions and book lists for this age group?
Hi Sandra, thanks for your comment. We have a few booklists in the Planners section the main NY Summer Reading website. http://www.summerreadingnys.org/planners/booklists.html If anyone finds any others, please let us know and we’ll add them. You can contact us by leaving a comment here or via email to: admin@summerreadingnys.org
Thanks!
As the library-media specialist at Candor Elementary School, I have asked for suggestions for fiction summer reading from our third through sixth grade teachers. They are letting me know of their all-time favorites and I am compiling them into a summer reading brochure. I will do a book talk with the students during our weekly LMC class and encourage them to read throughout the summer! Next year we hope to do the same with a non-fiction suggested reading brochure.
Hi Debbie, thanks so much for sharing your great summer reading idea! It would be fun to have the kids add their favorites to the list too. Looking forward to some lazy summer days with a good book myself.
The Eric Carle books are great for this summer’s reading theme. (They are especially good for preschoolers) The Grouchy Ladybug, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket, The Honeybee and the Robber, etc. Another great series is the “Diary of a Spider, Diary of a Worm, and Diary of a Fly” books. These are journals of the above critters and they are very funny. I was worried at first with this summer’s theme, but it’s growing on me.
I apologize for not introducing myself.
Hello my name is Rosa Diaz and I am a Children’s Librarian at the Rochester Public Library’s Lincoln Branch. I work with children ages 2- teens.
As the Children’s Librarian at Pine Bush Area Public Library, I have the best time coming up with creative displays for the Summer Reading Program. Lucky for me my child just finished the “Insect Collection/Identification” project for science class this past fall. Since I knew that the school cannot keep them all, and some parents don’t really want them to come home, I contacted the science teacher and was able to get it back for a terrific “Catch the Reading Bug” display. NOTE: It is preserved under glass with moth balls.
